the market. Exactly. That geopolitical friction is precisely what drove the spot price of oil past
the critical $100 per barrel psychological and technical barrier. And when oil crosses that $100
threshold the derivative assets just act like rocket fuel. The United States oil fun USO which
tracks near term crude futures shot up 83%. Huge move. But I want to zero in on a specific ETF in the
data that completely blew my mind. Be all you eat the break wave tanker shipping ETF. It was up 421%

itself. It tracks the futures contracts of crude oil tanker shipping rates. Specifically very large
crude carriers or VLCCs. Okay. To understand that massive spike you have to understand the
elasticity of maritime logistics. You cannot build a massive oil tanker overnight. Right. They take
years exactly the global fleet size is essentially fixed in the short term. When geopolitical conflicts
threaten major shipping lanes in the Middle East vessels are forced to reroute around the Cape of
Good Hope which adds what weeks to the journey weeks and because the journey takes longer a huge
percentage of the global tanker fleet is suddenly tied up in transit. So the available supply of
vessels plummets simultaneously maritime insurance premiums for vessels entering conflict zones
skyrocket. Wow. So you have fixed supply of ships drastically longer routes and exploding insurance
costs. The spot rates to charter of ELCC don't just go up linearly. They go completely parabolic.
And BAE captures the volatility of those forward freight agreements. Yes. It's not an investment for
the faint of heart obviously but it perfectly illustrates how acutely the market is pricing in supply
chain fragility. That makes total sense. The physics of the real world you know distance and time
are dictating the financial returns. But energy wasn't the only sector reacting to physical constraints.
Utilities in infrastructure had a massive Q1 XOU the utility select sector SPDR jumped 10.1 percent
which is huge for utilities. Right. Historically utilities are bond proxies. They are the sleepy
low growth regulated monopolies that you know widows and orphans hold for a 4 percent yield.
A 10 percent jump in a quarter is highly anomalous. It is anomalous if you view utilities through a 20th
century lens. Yeah. But we are witnessing a structural shift in the US economy. That 10 percent jump
has nothing to do with residential electricity pricing. Let me guess AI spot on. It is almost entirely
driven by the staggering electricity requirements of artificial intelligence data centers. The compute
power required to train and run large language models requires gigawatts of continuous uninterrupted
power on the cooling to right exactly. These server racks generate a man's heat requiring equally
massive liquid cooling infrastructure which draws even more power. So the utilities are essentially
the toll booths for the air revolution precisely. You cannot run next generation AI hardware without
securing the power grid capacity first. Utilities have become the primary bottleneck for technological
advancement. And we see this reflected downstream in the global X US infrastructure development ETF
PADE which rose 5.6 percent. Building these data centers requires concrete, steel, specialized HVAC
systems heavy engineering. It is fascinating how the market always finds the backdoor plays.
We also saw some distinct movements in the safe haven assets. The global X defense tech ETF
SHLD was up 3.5 percent while traditional legacy aerospace like ITA actually dipped a bit down 1.2 percent.

years immediately proceeding and following your retirement date. Kiplinger specifically highlights
sequence of returns risk. I think a lot of people misunderstand this concept. They think if the market
averages 7% over 20 years, they are safe. But they're not. Right. The order in which those returns
happen dictates whether you die wealthy or die broke. Walk us through the math of why the sequence
matters so much. Let's create a hypothetical scenario to make the math undeniable. Imagine you retire
with exactly $1 million. Your financial plan requires you to withdraw $40,000 a year to cover your living
expenses. Sounds reasonable. In a perfect world, your portfolio grows by 4% a year. You withdraw
4% and your million dollars lasts forever. But the real world has volatility. Precisely. Now imagine
the year you retire, the market crashes by 20%. Your million dollars instantly drops to $800,000.
But you still have to pay your mortgage, buy groceries, and pay for healthcare. So you withdraw your
$40,000. But wait, withdrawing $40,000 from an $800,000 portfolio isn't a 4% withdrawal rate anymore,
it's a 5% withdrawal rate. Exactly. You are forced to sell a much larger number of shares,
because the price of each share is severely depressed. You are cannibalizing your underlying engine.
At the end of year one, your portfolios is now down to $760,000. Ouch.
Now, let's say in year two, the market has a massive 25% recovery. You might think you're back to
even, but a 25% gain on $760,000 only brings you back to $950,000. Then you take out your next $40,000.
You are down to $910,000. So even though the market completely recovered its initial drop mathematically,
my portfolio is permanently impaired. I am nearly 100 grand poor simply because the bad year happened
first. That is sequence of returns risk. It is the mathematical destruction caused by liquidating
depreciated assets, and it is irreversible. To mitigate this, Kiplinger recommends the bucket
approach. You isolate your capital by its timeline. How does that look? Bucket one is two to three years
of living expenses sitting entirely in cash or short-term treasuries. When the market drops 20%,
you do not sell a single stock. You live off the cash bucket. You let the equities recover in peace.
Yes. Bucket two is your medium-term capital, utilizing reliable, low-volatility bonds funds,

You don't necessarily fear a massive crash, but the daily volatility is giving you an ulcer.

And if you stay in cash too long, you miss the recovery.
