Well, for sure.
You're picking up the color of your new card.
Right.
But then, imagine waking up on a random Tuesday morning to find out your broker just forcibly
liquidated your entire life savings.
You didn't push a button.
You didn't choose to sell.
Your account was just wiped out completely outside of your control.
It's terrifying.
That is exactly what just happened to about 360,000 investors over in South Korea this
summer.
Yeah.
We are diving deep into the research you shared with us today because whether you're
nearing retirement or you're just trying to beat inflation, this is the exact cautionary
tale you need to hear.
It really is.
The headline yield you see flashing on your screen next to a stock or an ETF, that is essentially
just marketing.
Just a shiny number.
Exactly.
The structure underneath that yield that dictates whether you're building durable wealth
or just walking right into a trap.
So our mission for this deep dive is to basically walk up the yield spectrum.
Right.
We're going to look at everything from a super secure 3.3% payout all the way up to a wild
12% speculative yield.
Yeah.
Climb in the ladder.
But before we get to the high flyers, we have to talk about what actually went down with
the South Korean stock market index, the KOSPI, because it perfectly illustrates the
difference between what you own and what you owe, right, the leverage trap exactly.
So earlier this year, the KOSPI index was just an absolute rocket ship.
By June 19th, it hit a peak of over 9,300, like 9,385.59 to be exact.
People were just pouring money into semiconductor company.
Oh, yeah.
The hype was unreal.
But then gravity took over by July 30th.
It had crashed roughly 40% dropping all the way down to about 5,593.
The devastation there was just immense.
But you know, we really have to separate the sector from the strategy here.
Well, the core thesis those retail investors had about semiconductors.
It wasn't entirely wrong.
In fact, if you look at the index itself, despite that massive 40% crash, yeah, it's still
up about 33% year to date.
So the underlying stocks actually held on to a lot of value.
The real disease here wasn't the semiconductor sector.
It was the leverage.
Precisely.
The disease was the leverage.
Right.
Because retail investors were using aggressive margin, just borrowing money to amplify their
gains.
Some were using like 3X leverage with the SOXL ticker.
Yep.
And using leverage like that is basically like borrowing someone else's car to NTI demolition
derby.
That is a great way to put it.
You don't actually own the vehicle.
And the guy who lent it to you controls exactly when you have to exit the arena.
And that's exactly where those 360,000 accounts got vaporized.
Let's walk through the actual mechanics of a margin call.
When you buy stocks on margin, your broker requires you to maintain a certain percentage of
equity.
So if the market drops 40%, your equity obviously plummets.
In Korea, we saw the margin call rate spike from a normal, manageable 2% up to over 10%.
Which means that the broker issues a demand, like deposit more cash immediately, or we sell
your assets to cover our loan.
Exactly.
And when you're highly leveraged, and the market turns that violently, you don't have the cash.
Right.
You don't get the luxury of riding it out and waiting for the rebound.
The broker just hits a button and forces you to sell at the absolute market bottom.
That forced liquidation wiped out roughly 0.7% of the entire South Korean population in a matter
of weeks.
That is just wild to think about their equity just evaporated.
But when you look through the records, you see the survivors, right?
The investors who are holding boring, unlevered cash flowing assets, tickers like SCHD, which
just pays stable dividends, or SGOV, which holds short-term teabills, and basically stead
completely flat, barely even noticing the crash.
The only on bottom.
Even JAA, which is an ETF holding AAA rated collateralized loan obligations.
And I know collateralized loan obligation sounds like really scary financial jargon.
It does sound intimidating.
But in this case, the research shows it just means a pool of top tier, highly secure corporate
loans.
All of those assets sailed right through the carnage.
They survived because their structure gave the investor optionality.
When you own unlevered assets outright, you are the one who decides when to sell.
A defined risk limit will always, always be in an unlimited downside bet.
Absolutely.
Which tells us that the absolute baseline of any income strategy, you know, before you even
look at high yields, it has to be a bulletproof core.
A foundation that doesn't get vaporized just because the market throws a tantrum.
Okay.
That sets up our first step perfectly.
Rung number one on our yield ladder.
The foundation of a resilient portfolio.
For this, the sources point heavily to the Schwab, US dividend equity ETF ticker SCHD.
Right now, it's yielding around 3.3%.
It has a rock bottom expense ratio of 0.06%, and it manages a massive $105 billion in assets.
But what I find super interesting is how it's built.
Yeah.
It's not what most people expect.
Right.
It doesn't rely on some star fund manager in a suit trying to pick winning stocks.
It's entirely mechanical.
It relies on strict structural rules.
And that mechanical nature is exactly why it's built to thrive over a 20 year horizon.
For instance, the ETF limits any single stock holding to a maximum 4% cap.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
And it rebalances itself quarterly.
If one company goes on a massive tear and suddenly makes up 10% of the portfolio, the
ETF mechanically trims it back down to 4% at the end of the quarter.
Exactly.
It forces you to sell high.
It locks in those gains and forces diversification, which basically prevents the kind of dangerous
concentration we just saw blow up in Korea.
And that concentration risk is incredibly common in other dividend funds, right?
Like, look at the Vanguard dividend appreciation ETF, the IG.
It's heavily concentrated in the tech sector, sitting at about 26% or the eye shares core
dividend growth ETF, DGRO, which leans heavily into financials at around 21%.
If tech or banking takes a hit, those funds suffer disproportionately.
They get dragged right down with it.
Whereas SHD goes the complete opposite direction.
It leans heavily into consumer staples, healthcare, and energy.
We're talking top holdings like Coca-Cola, Merck, Chevron, Proctor, and Gamble.
But I have to play devil's advocate for a second here.
We're talking about a 3.3% yield.
When inflation is still making everything at the grocery store way more expensive, is 3.3%
really enough to matter?
It matters deeply, but you have to understand its role.
This baseline tear isn't about getting rich quickly.
It's about predictable, unshakable demand.
Look at those companies.
People are still going to buy toothpaste, essential medicine, and soda, regardless of
whether the semiconductor market is booming or crashing.
That makes sense.
They're basically a recession proof.
Exactly.
These companies have deep dividend pedigrees.
That 3.3% provides steady, reliable cash flow that acts as an anchor.
It gives you the emotional and financial stability to take calculated risks on the next step
step.
Right.
You can't just sit in the defensive bunker forever.
Once that foundation is poured and your capital is safe, you need growth to outpace inflation
You have to shift from preservation to aggressive compounding.
Which leads us to rung number two, an incredibly interesting case study in the tech sector.
Oracle, ticker, O-R-C-L.
This is a $404 billion tech behemoth.
And honestly, if you just look at the headline yield, you'd probably scroll right past it.
Most people do.
It's paying a tiny 1.4%.
But the research emphasizes that the current payout isn't the story.
The growth of the payout is what actually matters here.
Oh, absolutely.
Oracle is essentially a dividend growth machine.
They have delivered 17 consecutive years of dividend raises.
17 years.
That's no joke.
Over the last decade, their annualized dividend growth rate sits at 12.8%.
And their most recent raise wasn't just a small incremental bump.
You know, just to keep the streak alive.
They raised the dividend by an astounding 25%.
The 25% raise is just massive.
And they can afford it because their payout ratio, like the percentage of their earnings they
actually spend on dividends, is sitting at just 34.3%.
So much headroom.
They have a ton of headroom to keep increasing that payout.
Plus, according to the fundamental valuations and the sources, shares are claimed to be about
29% undervalued right now.
Yep, the target price is hovering around $198.00 in fallen cents compared to where it's trading
currently.
But let's pause here.
Because when you actually dig into Oracle's balance sheet, things get very tense.
Oracle recently signed a massive pact with OpenAI, right?
Committing to provide $300 billion in computing power.
It's a staggering number.
Right.
And to physically fulfill that contract, Oracle has to build sprawling state-of-the-art data
centers.
They have to buy the land, the servers, the specialized cooling systems, and they have to pay for all
of that up front.
Yes.
The capital.
Exactly.
And it is brutally expensive.
And that upfront cost is taking a severe toll on their balance sheet.
Oracle is currently carrying $120 billion in long-term debt.
That is three times higher than their debt load just a decade ago.
It's a huge jump.
Their debt-to-equity ratio is sitting at 2.8, which is very high.
So my question is, how do you square a 25% dividend increase with $120 billion of debt
and a mandate to build all this incredibly expensive AI infrastructure?
Well, you've zeroed in on the central tension facing Oracle, and really, the entire tech sector
right now.
It's this massive tug of war between the CabEx required to win the AI race and the desire
to reward shareholders with dividend growth.
Right.
Now, the analysts at CFRA are projecting a very strong 20% growth rate in Oracle's EPS.
Their earnings per share over the next three years.
With that massive CabEx cycle is the catch.
Because earnings per share isn't just about how much money you make, right?
It's also about how many shares actually exist.
Correct.
Over the last decade, Oracle reduced their outstanding share count by a staggering 31% through stock
buybacks.
Wow.
Almost a third of the company.
Exactly.
When you have fewer shares in existence, every remaining share claims a bigger piece of the
profit pie.
That is what supercharged their earnings per share.
Okay.
I see where this is going.
$120 billion debt load forces them to pause their stock buybacks so they can afford to build
these data centers.
That massive tailwind pretty disappears.
So if you're buying Oracle for that dividend growth, you're essentially betting that they
can successfully monetize this new AI cloud infrastructure way faster than the debt eats
them alive.
That's a race.
You're betting they can evolve past just being, you know, a legacy database company that
requires a lot of patience watching a 1.4% yield slowly compound.
But what if you don't have the luxury of time?
What if you need it now?
Yeah.
What if you need a high yield right now, something like 6.5% from a household blue chip name?
Well, this is where we enter dangerous territory.
Usually, when a massive blue chip company offers a yield as high as 6.5%, it means that the broader
market is pricing in fear.
They smell blood in the water.
Exactly.
The market fundamentally believes that the business model is threatened, and therefore,
the dividend might be cut.
And that perfectly describes the situation with wrong number three, Verizon ticker VZ.
Since mid-March, Verizon shares have slumped nearly 15%.
Because the stock price went down, the dividend yield went up, hitting a very juicy 6.5%.
And the reason for the slump, the market is absolutely terrified of Elon Musk's starlink.
Yeah.
Yes.
Space internet.
The threat that starlink is going to offer direct to cell mobile service directly from satellites
in space, completely bypassing traditional cell carriers.
So we have to figure out, is Verizon 6.5% yield a deep value opportunity, or is it a classic
yield trap?
To figure that out, we really have to look past the flashy headlines about satellites and
actually understand the physics and the timeline of what starlink is trying to do here.
Do research provided a really great analogy to visualize this?
Think of wireless cellular spectrum like lanes on a massive highway, right?
Every text you send, every video you stream needs an open lane to travel on.
Right needs bandwidth.
Now, SpaceX is paying $20 billion to buy up some of these spectrum lanes.
But here's the fundamental problem.
A starlink satellite is broadcasting from hundreds of miles up in orbit.
It has to spread its signal over a massive geographical area.
It's completely diffused.
Exactly.
The time that signal travels from space down through the atmosphere and tries to reach your
phone while you're sitting inside a brick building in a dense city, the signal is incredibly
weak.
It's just a fundamental limitation of physics.
Traditional cell towers are closed by, right?
They're pushing strong signals through concrete and steel.
Satellites simply can't match that indoor penetration in urban environments.
No way.
And if we look at the actual business timeline, SpaceX's own filing show that the $20 billion
spectrum deal doesn't even close until November of 2027.
Wait, so they don't even own the lanes until late 2027?
Right.
Which means a broadly available competitive cellular service from starlink realistically
won't hit the market until 2029 or 2030.
Furthermore, SpaceX admits that this technology is primarily a compliment for rural areas.
Places where Verizon's traditional cell towers just don't reach any way.
Exactly.
It's not designed to replace dense city cell networks.
So the market is basically dumping Verizon's stock over a threat that is still years away
and fundamentally might not even work when you walk indoors.
It does seem like a massive overreaction.
But is there any real threat from starlink here, like at all?
Well, the real threat isn't to the mobile phones.
The real threat is to Verizon's convergence strategy.
Convergence.
Yeah.
For the past few years, Verizon has been aggressively bundling their 5G home internet service with
their mobile phone plans.
When a customer uses Verizon for both their house and their phone, it massively reduces
churn.
Oh, they're way less likely to cancel because it's too much of a hassle.
Exactly.
If starlink can start offering a highly competitive home internet and phone bundle, it could disrupt
Verizon's best strategy for keeping customers locked in.
Okay.
That makes sense as a long-term headwind.
But when we look at the immediate safety of that 6.5% yield, Verizon's fundamentals look
rock solid.
Very strong.
20 straight years of dividend increases.
Their payout ratio sits comfortably below 60%, so they aren't straining to make the payments.
And they are generating enough free cash flow to actively pay down their debt following
their recent acquisition of frontier.
So when you look at the actual structure, that 6.5% yield looks like a highly durable value
play, not a trap.
I agree completely.
It's a classic case of market sentiment, just mispricing the actual structural risk.
But let's take it a step further.
One number four, let's say 6.5% still isn't enough to meet your income goals.
You want 8%.
But you don't want to rely on just one telecommunications company.
You want broad exposure.
Right.
What if you want to engineer an 8% yield out of the entire S&P 500?
This brings us to the world of manufactured yield ETFs.
These are getting so popular.
They really are.
The research specifically highlights GPX.
That's the Goldman Sachs S&P 500 premium income ETF, which is currently yielding right
around 8%.
But the market is absolutely flooded with these flashy ultra high yield funds right now.
How do you tell the difference between a durable income ETF and one that is just cannibalizing
its own principle to pay you?
Yeah, that cannibalization process is known as NAV decay, or net asset value erosion.
And it happens because of the way most of these funds generate their high yields.
They use the strategy called selling covered calls.
Let's break that down for a second because understanding the mechanics here is literally
the only way to avoid the trap.
For sure.
If I own a stock, selling a covered call basically means I am selling a contract to someone
else.
That contract gives them the right to buy my stock at a specific higher price.
Let's say 10% higher than it is today, anytime in the next month.
Right.
They pay you a cash premium up front for that right?
And that cash premium is where the ETFs high yield comes from.
Exactly.
You get the cash today.
In exchange, you have literally capped your upside.
If the stock rockets up 30%, you don't get to keep those gains.
You're forced to sell the stock at that 10% cap.
Right.
It's like owning a house and someone pays you a thousand bucks a month for the right to buy
your house for $500,000 anytime this year.
Okay.
Good analogy.
If the neighborhood booms and the house is suddenly worth 700,000, they exercise the contract
by it for 500,000 and you miss out on 200 grand of upside.
You got your thousand bucks a month, but you lost the big win.
And here is where NAV decay destroys portfolios.
Many of the most popular covered call ETFs systematically capped 100% of their upside potential
every single month to generate maximum yield every single month every month.
So when the stock market has a huge rally, the ETF gets left behind.
But when the stock market crashes, the ETF still owns all the underlying stocks, so it drops
right along with the market.
Oh, that's brutal.
Over time, through multiple up and down cycles, the ETF captures all of the downside and none
of the upside.
The underlying principle slowly shrinks away.
It's an illusion of wealth.
You feel great collecting the 8% yield, but your actual account balance is just bleeding out.
So if capping the upside is what causes the account to bleed out, a sustainable ETF would
have to somehow leave the ceiling open while still selling options to generate income.
Exactly.
The PIX actually structure that mathematically.
GPIX solves it by using a dynamic option strategy.
Instead of mechanically selling calls on 100% of their portfolio and capping all the upside,
they dynamically manage the percentage of calls they sell based on market conditions.

If you want to push your yield higher than that 8% range, you can no longer rely on traditional
S&P 500 equities, even with fancy option strategies.
You have to step onto the speculative frontier.
Which brings us to the absolute top of our yield ladder.
Rung number five.
We are looking at yields of 12% and higher.
The deep end of the pool.
To get this, we're looking at business development companies where BDCs, specifically two major
lenders in the venture and tech space.
Hercules capital, ticker HTGC, and Trinity capital, ticker TIIN.
These are really unique entities.
They essentially act as alternative banks, loaning money to small and medium-sized science, tech
and venture-backed businesses that, you know, might not qualify for traditional bank loans.
But to understand the risk profile here, we have to look at how BDCs actually make their
money.
The vast majority of the loans they issue are floating rate loans.
Yes, it moves up and down in tandem with the Federal Reserve's interest rates.
When the Fed was aggressively raising rates a couple years ago, BDCs were just printing
money.
Their profit margins exploded.
But now, in the macro environment of 2026, the Fed is cutting rates.
Exactly.
Which means the interest payments those BDCs collect are dropping.
Their profit margins are actively compressing.
In fact, most of their peers across the BDC space are currently slashing their dividend payouts
just to survive the falling rates.
It's tough environment for them.
But Hercules capital and Trinity capital are holding the line.
They are still paying out yields over 12 percent, and they haven't cut.
Why are they surviving when everyone else is cutting?
It comes down to structural protections built directly into their loan agreements.
Both Hercules and Trinity negotiate strict interest rate floors with their borrowers.
Okay, so let's walk through the mechanics of a right floor.
If I borrow money from a BDC, my interest rate floats.
If the Fed cuts rates, my payment goes down.
But her weight floor is a contractual hard stop.
It says, even if the Fed cuts rates to zero, your interest rate will never drop below the
specific percentage.
Yep.
It guarantees a minimum baseline of income for the BDC, regardless of what the broader economy
does.
Exactly.
It completely changes their risk profile in a falling rate environment.
The capital actually claims that because of these rate floors, further rate cuts by the
Fed will have close to zero impact on their earnings.
That is a massive structural advantage.
But how do we value these two companies against each other?
For BDCs, the standard metric is price to envy or price to net asset value.
Right.
Basically, how much is the market willing to pay for the underlying loans the company holds?
Because Hercules and Trinity are considered high quality, they usually trade at a premium
to their actual assets.
Trinity Capital is currently trading right in its typical range, a 30-35% premium.
But Hercules Capital, which normally trades at a 40-50% premium and was even up at a 70%
premium in early 2025, is currently trading much cheaper than usual.
And we have to ask why it's suddenly cheaper?
Because if the underlying loans were defaulting, that would be a huge red flag.
Definitely.
But that isn't what happened here.
No, it's trading at a discount because of market drama.
Back in February, a short seller report was published titled The Myth of Hercules Capital.
Oh, short reports.
Yeah.
It threw a barrage of allegations of the company's accounting.
And predictably, the ambulance chasing class action lawsuits immediately followed which
spooked retail investors and drove the stock price down.
Classic panic cycle.
But here is the most critical data point in this entire segment.
Right after that short report dropped and the stock tanked.
These insiders, the executives who actually run the company, stepped up and bought almost
$3 million of their own stock with their own money.
Wow.
Insider buying of that magnitude is a massive signal of structural confidence.
When executives buy during a panic, they're essentially telling the market the short sellers
are completely wrong.
Put your money where your mouth is.
Exactly.
And if we look past the noise of the lawsuits and examine the underlying financials, Hercules
looks incredibly strong.
HTGC currently boasts a massive 120% dividend coverage ratio.
Meaning their net investment income is generating 20% more cash than they actually need to pay
that massive 12% yield.
They have a huge and very safe margin.
By comparison, Trinity Capital's coverage ratio is sitting at a much tighter 103.9%.
So when you combine the lower than usual premium caused by the short seller noise, the contractual
rate floors, protecting them from the Fed, and that massive 120% dividend coverage cushion.
Hercules Capital looks like a highly appealing buy on the speculative front here.
It really does.
It perfectly illustrates our core theme today.
At every single level, it's the underlying structure that dictates safety.
Absolutely.
So, let's synthesize everything we've covered because the through line here is just undeniable.
We started by looking at the smoking crater of the Korean KO's PI crash, where a leverage
vaporized 360,000 portfolios proving that your first priority must always always be survival.
Yep.
Don't get wiped out.
That led us to SCHD, which provides a bulletproof foundation through strict mechanical 4% position
caps.
Then we looked at Oracle, an undervalued dividend growth compounder fighting this massive
tug of war between 25% dividend hikes and the heavy debt of building AI infrastructure.

Think back to Oracle's massive data center build out and their $120 billion debt load,
with AI requiring literally trillions of dollars in upfront physical infrastructure, land
and massive electricity demands.
An astronomical cost.
We have to wonder, will the reliable cash flowing software blue chips of today become the
capital starved yield traps of tomorrow?
In 10 years, the safest, most durable dividend on the entire market might not come from the
software company running the AI.
Oh, interesting.
It might just come from the industrial company selling the specialized cooling systems to
keep those data centers from melting down.
That is a fascinating way to look at it.
